This will be a walk around tasting of over 30 wines, and mini-masterclasses with Master of Wine Sarah Abbott, who will guide you through the wines of this fascinating country. Tasty Riverstation sharing boards will accompany the wines.
You can expect to taste delicate whites from indigenous Koshu, but also sparkling and skin-contact expressions of this Japanese speciality. But there is more to Japanese wine than Koshu – there is also a diverse range of both red and white wines from a range of grapes and producers which you will be able to taste. The wines offer bright, expressive fruit and fresh elegance.
For decades, Japanese wine was barely exported, and much was of basic quality, made using imported concentrate. From the early 2000s, new regulations made it easier for boutique wineries to set up, and stipulated that only Japanese grapes can make Japanese wine. In just 15 years, the quality, diversity, and export potential of Japanese wine has soared.
This tasting is funded by JFOODO, the governmental organisation set up to promote the exports and promotion of Japanese drinks and food. It is organised and managed by wine marketing specialists, Swirl Wine Group.
