The Summer of Soave Soave Solstice Wine Tasting showcased silky, smooth Soave bringing the sunshine to a summer afternoon in London. Twenty Soave estates with their makers were on hand to present 40 wines in the beautiful and relaxed rooms and garden of Mary Ward House.
The #SummerofSoave tasting was part of a UK promotional campaign supporting the indies and restaurants who sell great Soave celebrating the relaxed splendours of Italy’s finest, sleekest white wine with a series of events and promotions. We held the walk around tasting, and a fascinating Masterclass hosted by Sarah Abbott MW, to Press & Trade during the afternoon with a Consumer tasting in the evening.
What is Soave?
Soave is a classic but under-the-radar wine – like the novel or TV series that everyone thinks they know. It is probably the most famous and definitely the most exported Italian white wine. The name means “smooth”, and Soave is a fine, dry white that is seductive, but gentle. Made by family producers in the hills not far from Venice, Soave is one of the most dynamic and sustainable wine regions of Italy, through its collaboration with the World Biodiversity Organisation, and its recognition from the United Nations as an area of rich agricultural heritage. (GIAHS).
June 21st is the Summer Solstice – the longest day of the year, when the sun seemed to the ancients to stand still, and bathe us in golden glow. The Italian astronomer Gallileo loved wine, lived near Soave, dared to prove that actually, we orbit the sun, and was not afraid to see things differently.

We had a number of key figures from the wine industry including; Alex Hunt MW – Managing Director and Buyer @Berkmann, Stephen Spurrier – Consultant Editor @Decanter, Andrea Rinaldi – President @UK Sommelier Association, as well as a number of head Sommeliers from top London restaurants, Wine Educators and Independent Wine Merchants.
The event was a huge success, the wines really well received and surprised and delighted all who attended with their elegance and versatility.
The tasting not only created a greater awareness of these exquisite wines for consumers and trade alike, but subsequently we have continued to act as a proactive liaison with the producers and foster potential new importer relationships.
