THE EVENT

This fascinating virtual tasting with Sarah Abbott MW was a deep dive into all things qvevri.  Attendees were sent selected Georgian Qvevri wine in advance of the event so were tasting wines together through the internet ether!  Sarah Abbott MW is deeply passionate about good Qvevri wine so it was a thrilling session.  We explored how ancient clay fermenting vessels (sometimes called amphora) solve a lot of wine-making problems, such as temperature control, healthy fermentation dynamics, cap management, and fining and clarification and tasted how good Qvevri wine-making leads to textured, pure, pristine wines without any oxidative character.

Qvevri have inspired the growth of amphora winemaking throughout the world – so this virtual tasting was a wonderful way to explore and taste wines from the motherland and discuss and compare their merits.
